THE HISTORY OF DIXIE LIVING MAGAZINE
Editor In 2001 I picked up and left Central Florida looking for solitude. I found it in Bullock County, Alabama. Or so I thought. I bought a small country store to occupy the time I wasn’t hunting or fishing. You just can’t do that every day. There were periods during the day with no customers and nothing else I felt like doing so I would read. One day I picked up an edition of the Union Springs Herald. I read a couple of the regular columns they printed. And I thought, “Heck, I can do that.” So I wrote a couple of columns and submitted them to Thomas May, then the editor. “I’ll print them but we don’t pay for columns,” he told me. That suited me. I wasn’t looking for a job anyway. So I started a weekly column. I called it The View From Tanyard. Tanyard, pop. 37, is the community in which I live. Amazingly, the column was a success. Its popularity made me attempt to, as they say in the city, expand my horizons. I found a little magazine called Pike’s Peek in Troy, Al. It was a monthly publication and was quite popular in Pike County. I wrote articles for them for several months and the publication was sold. I continued writing for the new owner, Glenda Blackmon. But after just a few months she was tragically killed in an auto accident. She had changed the name to Pike County Living and as popular as it was, it fell by the wayside. Several people contacted me looking for the magazine. I started doing some checking and found that the magazine was missed by lots of folks in the community. So after talking to my wife, we decided to take the plunge. We published the first issue of Dixie Living in November of 2004. The rest is, as they say, history. We now cover most of Southeast Alabama, spreading into Western Georgia and the Florida panhandle. We print 5000 magazines per month and have subscribers in 23 states. We are growing every month. Even though the magazine is free to those that visit our advertisers, many people subscribe to make sure they don’t miss an issue. We charge just enough to cover the postage and mailing expenses. So the magazine is still free to subscribers. They just pay to get it mailed to their homes. I am awed by the success of Dixie Living. I am thankful for our advertisers, some of which have been with us from the first issue. And the readers are great too. They contribute jokes and stories that keep the pages from becoming stale. As you talk to family and friends tell them about our website and magazine. With your support Dixie Living will be around for a long, long time. |
